Friday Featured Photographer – Scott Haefner

Scott Haefner is this week’s Featured Friday Photographer.

ScottHaefner

I am interested in many genres of photography, but the theme that emerges in almost all of my more recent work is an attempt to create unique and non-cliché imagery.

For instance, while I do shoot “typical” landscapes, I usually shoot them at night under the full moon. I also use a technique called light painting to sculpt the light in front of my camera, lending more creative control. I use  flashlights and off-camera flash as well as colored theatrical gels for  dramatic effect. I often shoot in places that most people never experience first-hand: abandoned hospitals and military bases, ghost towns, and other forgotten relics of our past.

Another approach I use is attaching my light-weight Nikon D60 DSLR to a large kite to obtain unique vantage points. I suspend my camera anywhere from a few feet to several hundred feet above the ground, occupying the space between a step ladder and a small plane flight. Using a wide angle lens at relatively low heights enables me to capture images from a different perspective than most of us are accustomed to, even in the age of ubiquitous access to aerial iamgery in Google Earth, et al. I also have a 30-foot carbon fiber fishing pole to which I attach my compact, Sigma DP1 for times when the wind is not cooperative.

I really love this Friday feature Kent – another great photographer for me to explore their work. The ‘Black Hole’ shot on Scott’s site is wonderful. Thanks for the references again.
