Photo Tip ~ Histogram Pop Quiz

When I ask the question, I inevitably get a mix of answers.

Do you use the histogram on your camera while you shoot?

The responses range the full gamut. From “what’s the histogram?” to “I use the histogram for everything I do.”

Well, it’s pop quiz time. Sure it’s easy to get the feel for what’s happening in the histogram as you’re shooting. Can you read the histogram to put together the anatomy of photos you didn’t make? Let’s try it out below.

Here’s a group of four numbered images. See if you can determine which histograms below match the images above. Send your answers in the form of a comment below.

Are you noticing any telling characteristics in either the images or the histograms? Once you train your eye, this is all second nature. Good luck.;)

Okay, I’ll play – I’ve only been recently using my histogram …

1.C – A lot of clipped dark tones and a spike from the moon
2.D – Not much contrast (no bright highlights or dark shadows)
3.A – shows nice contrast with no clipping
4.B – Also shows contrast but there are some clipped dark tones
