Head in the Clouds – Really Fast (Time Lapse)

Head in the Clouds – Really Fast (Time Lapse)

We’ve been having some nice rains lately, actually thunderstorms. Usually in mid afternoon the cumulus clouds start building and it’s always fun to watch. The idea crossed my mind to shoot a time lapse series of images of the clouds building. So, on a tripod, with the Nikon D200 and my 70-200mm lens, I zoomed into a growing section of clouds and set the camera to shoot in 3 seconds intervals.

With the series of images loaded into the computer, I then opened the first image in Photoshop CS4 and checked the “open in sequence” box at the bottom. I set the frame rate to 30 frames per second, which gave me the equivalent of the clouds moving 90 times faster than normal speed. Once the sequence opened in PS, then I can goto File > Export > Render to Video. And there you have it. I also added a hue/saturation colorized layer to give the sepia tone effect, before rendering the final video.
