Thank u so much for the tips! Sure appreciate it.

One extra thing I do when taking longer exposures is to turn off mirror lockup and also Image Stabilization.
Thanks for the great video.

Yes, Shane, good point. I covered that in this blog post. And it’s true that VR or IS needs to be turned off when on a tripod,

Hello Marvin,
Fascinating how things happen on the internet. Yes, my family is mainly in IL and yes, we are from Scottish decent. I don’t know as much as I should about our family name. Perhaps you can send along additional information.

Thanks! :)

Hi Kent, some really sound advice here. Two night ago I was on the middle of London Bridge photographing down river towards Tower Bridge and it was very windy I managed to get a few decent shots during lulls but wish I had seen your video beforehand, especially the bits about the lens hood and strap.

Tony,
To think this tip might help you, all the way across the pond, just made my day. Thank you and good luck with the Tower Bridge. :)

What tripod(s) do you use and recommend? I want to get one and have never had one before.

Hi Jackie,
I actually have a “selecting a tripod” video coming soon. Essentially consider; price first, the weight of the heaviest gear you will be using on the tripod, your shooting height without slouching over, usage (travel = lightweight, studio = weight not an issue). This will narrow it down considerably. Let me know if that helps. :)

Jerry Curtis

Two other tripod tips: When you extend the legs, if you do not need the full height, extend the thickest legs, rather than the thin ones. They will give more support. Also, avoid extending the center column, if at all possible.

Great points! Thanks for adding to the topic. :)

hey kent,, have you ever done a guide to FlashGuns ? I am looking to buy my first one and want to know what to look for… Look forward to hearing from you,, ian :)

Perhaps I will. I shoot with Nikon and use the SB800s (now SB900) which are very specific to Nikon. I’ll have to investigate Canon and others as well. Thanks for the input.

Thanks! This will come in handy with Darcy’s party if I decide to go for it.

If you decide??? You’re already signed up. lol :) Can’t wait to see your results!

I’ve always wanted to know how this was done! Thanks!

You’re welcome! Please share some images with us. :)

Well, when I commented I hadn’t decided yet!!
By the way, I used your tutorial. It was so simple and didn’t involve taping the stencil to the lens which I liked. I didn’t use tape for the loop. I was too lazy. I just cut a long tab on the stencil itself and used that to pull it out. Worked like a charm.

The first star stencil I used didn’t work at all. Would it be because it was off center or too large? I was getting half of the star which looked like a leaf.

Yes, it needs to be centered and the size matters. If it’s too big the full shape won’t render. It does take some trial and error. :)

I am definatly going to try this. I love shooting shallow depth of fields to highlight subjects. Thanks for this tip
