Very nice Kent!! What a sweet piece of equipment. You should really be more excited ;)

The picture of the dock is beautiful. Did you use a different white balance setting for each, or do they just process them that differently?

Also, what storage solutions do you use – I want buy some stock!

Bragger! Now that I got that off my chest, I have a technical question that may sway me to switch from a D800 on order to a D800E. Back in the film days, chromatic aberration was a problem. With digital, it has all but gone away, the current version of Lightroom auto corrects for it. I anticipate that removing sensor filters will be one of the ways that camera manufacturers squeak out performance from cameras. So now my question, how long do you think it will take until mainstream software, Lightoom and Photoshop, will be able to convincingly correct for moire, etc?

thanks,

Barry

Oh, I’m excited! SanDisk and a plethera of various external hard drives. ;)

Good question. Based on how fast all the manufacturers copy each other (look at the mirror-less phase) I would guess sans-moire filter will be everywhere by this time next year and the software will be close behind. The Nikon software is supposed to deal with it. Perhaps I’ll install it and try it out. :)

I’ve been going back and forth between the D800 and the D800E and I’m still not sure which one I should get. I rarely shoot patterns that would create moire, but it still sounds like a post-processing nightmare.

The main question I have is about the sharpness. Is it really that noticeably sharper than the D800? I currently shoot with a D700 and have no issues with sharpness. Yes, images are soft straight out of the camera, but a bit of sharpness in post takes care of it. What is then the advantage of the D800E?

The D800E images start out like the sharpened image you just described. If there is even a slight motion while you shoot, the images are noticeably unsharp. I’m still getting the feel of this camera, it is truly the sharpest SOOC images you can get today.

Interesting that movement is so noticeable. I wonder what happens in a panned shot at slow shutter speed (following a car or running animal for example). Thanks for sharing this.

Well, shutter speed is going to play into the motion equations, as with all cameras. The difference between D700 and D800E images is huge. When you sharpen a D700 image you’re starting with a blurred image, even if it looks sharp. With the D800E the image is tack sharp straight from the camera, sharpening isn’t even necessary, unless you want ultra sharp. It’s a big jump from the D700 (which is my other main camera) to the D800E. I have not shot the D800, but it most likely would be a larger file size, but similar quality to D700.

Thanks for the replies. You’ve given me more to think about but I’ll certainly look into the E a bit more. I look forward to seeing how you go as you continue to use it.

Kent- B&H still has my “Non E” backordered… apparently waiting more than 5 minutes was a mistake. My take was the E was for you pros, while the Non E was better for us wannabes. Also have a Lytro full field toy on backorder- interested to see which one gets here first…

So beautiful!

Lovely capture!

Wow, Kent…the detail in this is amazing. I especially love the blues – on the harness and in horizon reflection in the horse’s eye.

Such a beautiful photo! Beautiful light and detail!

I’m so afraid of horses that I haven’t gotten this close to one in years. Gorgeous animals.

Gorgeous photo! Love the reflection in his eye!
